Veterinarians discuss pet dental care
“Regular dental care is an overall health maintenance issue,” says Dr. Gary Rose of Cabrillo Pet Hospital in San Diego, Calif. “We’re finding that many diseases are tied to overall dental care. It’s probably the most cost-effective way to lengthen your pet’s life span. Pet owners often overlook dental care.”
Cabrillo Pet Hospital performs cleanings, extractions and gingival surgery. “We’ve done some root canals, but not many. We know a vet who specializes in root canals who we refer. Pets typically need vaccines and dental care once a year. Some pets can go four or five years without a cleaning, depending on their diet,” he says.

“…all of the vet tech's clearly love cats and handle them really well no matter how the cat is behaving. They do a great job of explaining exactly what's going on, what the treatment options are, and what it's going to cost.” Lorraine B.
"…I dropped my dog off for a teeth cleaning and when I picked him up found out they removed nine of his teeth! I had no indications that his teeth were a problem, not even a phone call to say they wanted to remove them! Imagine if you went to a dentist for a cleaning, they put you under, you woke up and they had removed nine teeth because they were loose!" Marilyn S.
