Q&A with professional movers

Angie’s List interviewed professional movers from around the country to find out how they charge and why you shouldn't just rely on friends and family.

“Our fees are $36 per hour per man and $36 an hour per truck. Most movers worth anything are going to be within $3 of that rate. We also do packing, and there’s a fixed price per box, plus the paper, tape and other things, so that gets more complicated,” says Walter Burrows, owner of Burrows Moving Co. in Chicago.

Tips from Angie's List

Moving day madness

According to experts, a number of rogue moving companies advertise exclusively on the Internet and aren't locally or regionally based. "One mistake people make is choosing a mover off the Internet they don't know anything about," says Joe Harrison, president of the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). He warns against relying on over-the-phone and online estimates. "What you don't want to do is use a company that's located 2,000 miles away from where you are. Insist on a [trained and experienced] estimator to do an in-home survey."More on avoiding bad movers

Tips for a hassle-free move

1. Make plans with a moving company four to six weeks in advance, especially if you’re moving during the peak summer months.

2. Arrange your move for the middle of the month. Those dates are typically less busy, and you’re more likely to get a top-notch crew.

3. If a mover requires you to pay a big deposit to “hold the dates” or “ensure prompt service,” choose another one.

“Almost every piece of furniture was damaged, including large gashes in the dining room table, bench torn upholstery. Additionally, their moving truck hit our Live Oak tree, put a softball sized hole in their trailer, and they refused to pay for the tree damage…” Edward G.

“…moved from a house to an upstairs apartment. They worked nonstop and moved everything (2 full rooms of furniture and a gazillion boxes). Nothing, including a glass cabinet, was damaged. No surprises, which is the best thing of all!” Gayle L.

“…wrapped and padded all our belongings carefully and didn't damage anything. They completed the job right on time within three days…” Lois D.
